Our nurse-led Cat Wellness Clinics are designed for cats over the age of 10 years old who seem too healthy to require a vet consultation. They are ideal to help owners manage age related changes and to catch diseases that might affect older cats without showing many symptoms until the disease has already progressed significantly.
As cats age, you might see some of the following changes:
- Sleeping more and spending less time outdoors
- Less tolerant of handling, crying when lifted or touched, visible changes to joints, posture or movement such as jumping or using stairs
- Vision and hearing changes
- Smelly breath, dropping food, salivating or visible dental changes
- Drinking and urinating more
- Eating more but still losing weight
- Meowing at night
- Vomiting or diarrhoea or changes in appetite
- Coat quality deterioration and decreased ability to groom themselves
Some of these changes could indicate underlying kidney damage, high blood pressure or thyroid disease. While not always obvious, these conditions can be very serious and will often cause a marked deterioration in your cat’s quality of life.
At our Cat Wellness Clinics, one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses will examine your cat, perform some tests and after discussing these with the vet, a report will be issued to you with your cat’s results and one of our team will contact you to discuss these.
The clinics include:
- A discussion about your cat’s general health – have you noticed them sleeping more or moving more stiffly. Do they drink a little more or perhaps they have a smelly breath?
- An examination of your cat’s general appearance – this helps us to determine if they are keeping themselves clean, managing to maintain their body weight or if they have some age-related muscle loss.
- A dental check to see if they have any tartar or dental disease that may require home-management advice or some more in-depth care or treatment.
- A blood test that we run at the practice to check your cat’s kidney function, their thyroid function and a few other things to monitor your cat’s health.
- A blood pressure check which helps us ensure your cat doesn’t require medication to help keep them protected from the dangers of elevated blood pressures.
- A urine dipstick and concentration test* to further assess your cat’s kidney function, if there is any protein being lost or if there is any excess sugar in their urine which could indicate diabetes. *Subject to urine being collected at home and brought to the clinic for testing on the day of the appointment. As these clinics are significantly discounted, we are unable to further reduce the fee if you cannot bring in a urine sample for testing.
We understand that your cat is important to you and that you want the very best for them, so we have ensured this clinic remains cost effective and beneficial to you and your cat. Although we will endeavour to get all the checks done within the 30-45 minute consultation time, some kitties need a little extra time or some medication to help them feel a bit more relaxed, in which case we would advise that you leave them with us for a few hours to ensure the best care for them.
