It suddenly seems that adverts for holidays are everywhere (or is it just me?) and it begins to dawn on all of us that jumpers will soon be shed and waistlines might need some attention! With the dark evenings, cold weather and even darker mornings our pets tend to suffer too from a decrease in exercise and hence an increase in waistlines. We all know that obesity is not good for us but did you know that overweight pets on average have a shorter life expectancy by up to 2 years?
She has been to Shalford Infants and Longacre in Shamley Green with Louise as part of this year’s curriculum "A Visit to the Vets". During that time the children were shown how to give a dog a physical examination. Bob was very good and loved all the attention - especially the biscuits!The children were all very well behaved and even clever enough to know what an otoscope and an ophthalmoscope are used for (do you?). For those who wanted to,they even got to listen to Bob's heart with a stethoscope. The longest Bob has probably ever sat still for!
Congratulations to Mr March! We are so proud that Nipper Measures has been selected to be the cover of Your Dog magazine for the March edition. He's a very smart boy I am sure you will all agree! When he next visits the practice the red carpet will be waiting!
As we've all noticed this week has been especially cold - my car registered -10°C this morning! During this cold snap The Blue Cross have sent us a warning regarding some emergencies they have seen involving gritter salt and antifreeze. The warning comes after several cats died from salt toxicity during the last icy snap. In the last few days a cat also died from suspected antifreeze poisoning.
The great thing about being a Vet is that no two days are the same. We see some very interesting cases and thought you might find it interesting to hear about some of them in our 'Case of the month' section.
Thursday early evening saw a great talk at the practice by Louise on the new Pets Passport regulations and what it means for your pets. Thankfully things have become easier and cheaper.
It's not been that widely documented but the Pets Passport system has changed as of the 1st January 2012. Thankfully it is easier and cheaper to set up. However some note does need to be made of other risks that our pets can face when travelling abroad.
We moan about the weather in the UK but it does have the advantage of preventing some nasty tick borne diseases and some parasites that are prevalent further south, especially around the Med. Our pets have no natural immunity to these problems. Thankfully with some pre-planning though most of the risks can be prevented and you and your pets can enjoy a happy holiday.
